Madeleine Hope Arthurs has a  BA in studio art from Smith Collage, a BFA in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in NYC and also an MFA in Illustration from the SVA.  Arthurs also graduated from Teachers College in NYC with a MA in Art and Art Education.  In 2018, Arthurs was selected for the FIne Arts Contemporary Practices Summer Residency at SVA.


Arthurs' artist books are included in collections at such places as the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in DC, Bowdoin College in Maine and the Center for Book Arts in NYC.  Arthurs' artwork can also be found on the Drawing Center's Viewing Program's online Artist Registry, NYC.

 

Among other exhibitions, Arthurs has been in various group shows at the Ronald Feldman Gallery (NYC), Exit Art (NYC), the School of Visual Arts Galleries (NYC), Local Project Gallery (LIC, NYC), City without Walls (Newark, NJ), Tower Art Gallery, and SUNY Brockport (NY).

Among other jobs, Arthurs taught elementary school visual art for the NYCDOE from 2007 till 2021.  For over 4 years starting in 2000, Arthurs was a freelance dot portrait illustrator for the Wall Street Journal.  She also was a painter for Jeff Koons in 1999 and an animation cel painter for Daria on MTV in 1998. 

 

Arthurs lives in NYC and adores parks, zoos and aquariums.
